BIOGRAPHY
Arkadiy Ivashkin is a Moscow-born architect and sculptor who is currently based in Porto, Portugal. He has had a passion for art since childhood, engaging in activities such as sculpting, drawing, and wood carving. Arkadiy studied at the renowned art school №50 in Moscow and later graduated from Moscow Architect University (MARCHI) with a specialization in public space architecture. It is worth noting that during his studies, Arkadiy also dedicated several years to classical sculpting.
With over 25 years of professional experience, Arkadiy has worked for various architecture and design firms, providing architectural consultation and creating drawings and architectural models. From 1996 to 2022, he ran his own architectural practice in Moscow, working on diverse projects including private houses, apartments, cafes, museums, clubs, and restaurants. Throughout his career, Arkadiy continued to pursue sculpting, experimenting with different forms and materials.
In March 2022, due to his disagreement with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Arkadiy made the decision to leave Russia and relocate to Portugal.

TECHNIQUE
Since moving to Portugal, Arkadiy has focused primarily on sculpting and has developed a unique technique that involves using recycled materials such as paper, plastic bottles, scotch tape, cardboard, and metal wire. This technique allows for flexibility, requiring minimal time, space, and financial resources. It enables the sculptor to concentrate on the idea and form itself, fostering experimentation.
With his extensive experience in sculpting and the utilization of this distinctive technique, Arkadiy has been able to explore and investigate various subject matters through the form of the object itself. In his series titled "Idea of a horse," Arkadiy delves into the theme of horses, not based on a realistic depiction of the animal, but rather on the concept and representation of it. This exploration leads him to experiment with proportions, decorativeness, posture, and movement. The works from this series evoke images of horses from the Neolithic age, sculptures from past centuries, children's toys, or even objects of cult significance.
Arkadiy actively participates in live exhibitions and has recently held an exhibition titled "Idea of a horse" at the Concept store Pepino on Rue Migel Bombarda, Porto's main artistic street, from April to June 2023. Currently, his sculptures are featured in two different exhibitions. The first is the "Encontros" exhibition at the Olga Santos Gallery, and the second is a collective exhibition organized by the Association of Artists Cooperative de Arvora, the primary artists' union in Porto, of which Arkadiy is a member.
